  • Police

The explosive chaos of Ferguson Missouri and Baltimore Maryland sometimes seems so far away but the debate has become so riddled with generalizations that it’s easy to forget the good guy cops  who work on the front lines to protect all of us everyday.

When the nation is questioning so much about how we police our communities and how police relate to community members it’s difficult to divorce police killings from the good things cops do for the protection of the community everyday.

In holding cops accountable for their actions we must also acknowledge cops for the work they do. Otherwise the good cops get tainted by all the bad apples EVERYDAY

  • William Buckley

William Buckley once said “idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitiveâ€. What do you think?

  • Congress

Roger Kaufman writes -where are the statesman from yesteryear who could put their differences behind them and craft legislation and compromise for the benefit of the country?  What do you think?

  • Infrastructure

Michael Dobie says the warning signs are everywhere. Bridges roads tunnels and ports are crumbling. There is bipartisan acknowledgment that better infrastructure means better jobs growth and more investment . He says skepticism about cost overruns, endless delays and bureaucratic ineptitude is justified. But he concludes that doesn’t mean we should do nothing. It means we have to do it better.

  • Political Flypaper

J.B. comments on a cartoon depicting a relationship between white supremacists and the GOP.  He reminds readers that history shows Democrats have been responsible for abuses heaped on black people over many years. They were the politicians in charge when the Jim Crow segregation laws were passed and when black Americans were discouraged from voting.  He also reminds readers that lynchings happened under Democratic administrations that were never investigated or prosecuted. Finally he reminds readers that President Dwight D Eisenhower sent troops to the South to stop abuses. Should the GOP remind voters of this historical information?

  • Planned Parenthood

Columnist Cathy Young wrote “the moral muddle of abortion may be inevitable given the complexities of the issue itself”in an article she recently wrote about the allegations of Planned Parenthood selling organs from aborted fetuses. She goes on to write that “while there is no persuading the committed activists on either side, polls show that most Americans are open to compromise solutions.” What is your opinion?

  • Voter Apathy

David J writes voting requires little
sacrifice and honors those who made the ultimate sacrifice to make it possible.
Leo M writes The disconnect between Americans’ belief  in democracy and why so few vote is nothing less then a “canary in the coal mine” warning no one seems to be hearing.  Saving the democracy we all believe in can only become a reality when all Americans are willing to do the hard work necessary to become informed voters so they are able to distinguish between truth and fiction by focusing in on the few sources of reliable information (that can be trusted[ed note]).

One New York state elected official suggested that the government should offer a tax credit to citizens of $250-$500 to show up and cast their votes noting “for a couple, that could mean $1000 and make voting more meaningful. Something has to be done. We have to incentivize people to come out”.  What do you think?
